Pomegranates are in season during the fall and winter months, but sometimes they can be tricky to cut open. Well, here is one method of cutting open a pomegranate that minimizes the mess and takes the least amount of time.
In this video of the Produce Picker Podcast, you'll learn how to cut open a pomegranate and avoid the mess that can be associated with getting the seeds out of a pomegranate. First, place the pomegranate on top of a cutting board, and cut the top crown around the top of the pomegranate until you can pop it off like a lid. Slice the skin into four sections, along the ridges of the pomegranate.
Next, grab a large bowl and fill it with water. Then, submerge the fruit into the water and pull it apart into pieces. As you coax out the seeds with your fingers, you'll notice the white piths will float and the seeds will sink.
When you're done, toss the skin and piths into the trash and grab a strainer and just strain out the water. Tada! Seeds in a bowl. This might be the fastest (and easiest!) way to cut open a pomegranate.
