There are few things that capture the majesty of this great planet quite like intimate footage of whales — the below footage is no exception.
In a recent episode of Life on the Reef from PBS, drone footage shows Humpback whales just having finished their journey to the Great Barrier Reef in July to calve their babies. As PBS points out, the Humpback whale faced extinction after a their population was hunted until a mere 500 remained in our oceans in the 1960s. Despite fears that they'd be unable to bounce back, their resilience proved their critics wrong, and their population is slowly making its return thanks in part to ongoing efforts to protect their species.
Footage like that below proves to us the importance of conservation efforts and a necessity to keep our oceans clean to ensure the survival of its many diverse and beautiful species. We needn't look any further than this and similar footage of mothers and their calves to realize that these extraordinary mammals warrant our protection. But it serves as well as a reminder of the grandeur of our planet, of it's many spanning and diverse aquatic systems on which — even when unwittingly — all life on this planet relies.
