Husband With Alzheimer’s Disappears To Buy Wife Flowers

One day, Melvyn Amrine completely disappeared. His wife Doris was terrified. When police found him, even they couldn't believe what the man was really up to! Doris and Melyvn have been married for decades. However, Melvyn was recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The memory loss meant that he could barely get around by himself. Doris was watching her husband's health decline, but when he went missing, it reignited a very special kind of hope.

When he disappeared, Doris called the police. Sgt. Brian Grigsby and Officer Troy Dillard found him wandering the streets two miles away. But Melvyn wasn't ready to just go with the officers. There was something he absolutely needed to do.

"He wasn't going home until he got those flowers," Sgt. Grigsby told CBS' Steve Hartman. "That's what he wanted. He wanted flowers for his wife, because tomorrow was Mother's Day. We had to get those flowers. We had to get them. I didn't have a choice."

Melvyn got his wife flowers every Mother's Day since the birth of their first child. He couldn't remember much, but he remembered how important the love of his life was. Security cameras captured the exchange and when he didn't have enough money, the officers kindly slipped the cashier the difference. Then they escorted him home to his wife, who had been nervously waiting.

"As he came up those steps, and I saw those roses and the smile on his face, I just broke inside," Doris says. "I just said, 'Thank you, thank you.' Because I saw his heart."
