I have lost count of how many times I've marathoned my favorite episodes of the ultimate sitcom classic, I Love Lucy. Not only does its timeless hi-jinx remain entertaining after all these years, but Lucille Ball has become one of my biggest personal heroes after learning about her impressive personal life.
As Lucy Ricardo, she and her real life husband, Desi — also known as Ricky on the show, of course — certainly had their ups and downs throughout their iconic on-screen marriage. Between Lucy's constant drive to be part of Ricky's performances and also a star all on her own, and Ricky's desire to have the more "traditional housewife" men were accustomed to in that era, there was no shortage of hilarious drama.
And though actors Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz eventually called it quits, the on-screen couple always made sure to remind each other of the love between them by the end of every episode. 1. It's OK To Argue
You could always count on a pretty heated argument from the Ricardos to kick off each episode's plot, but you also knew they'd find a way to forgive and compromise before the end credits rolled.
2. Don't Jump To Conclusions
In an early episode, Lucy reads a mystery novel that leads her to suspect Ricky is out to get her. Obviously, he had some fun with the silly situation, and she ultimately learned exactly how much her man really loved her.
3. Persistence (And Patience) Pays Off
Despite Ricky's admonishments, Lucy would usually find a way into showbiz with some crazy antic or otherwise through her sheer determination.
4. Help Each Other Bounce Back When It Doesn't
Of course, those also tended to fall through, more often than not. But Lucy also knew she could count on Ricky to comfort her before trying her next scheme.
5. Negotiations Work Better Than Demands
Lucy was given plenty of rules from her hubby over the series' six seasons, but they each learned it was better to compromise than cause chaos with absolutes.
6. Honesty Really Is The Best Policy
When Ricky didn't have the heart to tell Lucy a mink coat wasn't actually her anniversary present, she discovered the truth on her own and decided to play a hilarious prank on him — something that could have been avoided if he had been honest!
7. Speak Each Other's Language
There were plenty of moments where Ricky's native language would mix Lucy up, especially if he happened to be extra mad at a situation. But she could usually find a way to know exactly what he was saying by learning to read his signals.
8. Keep Passion Alive
After every disagreement, no matter how bad things seemed, they would always end with a sweet smooch or kind gesture between the two lovebirds.
9. Most Importantly, Make Each Other Laugh
No matter how big Lucy messed up or how unreasonable Ricky was acting, the goofballs knew exactly how to put a smile on their sweetheart's face.
