Norma Stock and Gordon Yeager wed on the same day she graduated from high school on May 26, 1939. They went on to have a beautiful marriage with four children and demonstrated a strong love that most can only hope for.
"They just loved being together,” son Dennis Yeager told Iowa’s KCCI. “He always said 'I have to stick around. I can't go until she does because I have to stay here for her and she would say the same thing.’”
And that’s exactly what happened after 72 years together, like Kenneth and Helen Felumlee who died hours apart after 70 years of marriage.
One day, Norma and Gordon got into a car accident and were rushed in the hospital. Mr. Yeager died shortly after at the age of 94, while holding Mrs. Yeager’s hand. Although he stopped breathing, Dennis noticed that his father's heart monitor was still functioning normally.
“The nurse checked and said that's because they were holding hands and it's going through them,” Dennis said. “Her heart was beating through him and picking it up.”
Just one hour later, Norma also took her last breath. She was 90.
"Neither one of them would've wanted to be without each other. I couldn't figure out how it was going to work," said daughter Donna Sheets. "We were very blessed, honestly, that they went this way."
