Fire Department Surprises Woman On Her 100th Birthday

When we think about the men and women who serve our communities as firefighters and rescue workers, we think of them as heroes who put their lives on the line to help others. However, their heroic work doesn't necessarily end at rushing into burning buildings.

The incredible folks at Norfolk Fire-Rescue in Norfolk, VA, have gone above and beyond once again. They recently showed up at the home of long-time Norfolk resident Jeanette Carty. When she opened the door, she received quite a surprise.

Standing in front of her house were the members and trainees of Norfolk Fire-Rescue, who had come to wish this wonderful woman a happy 100th birthday!

Several of Carty's family members, including her late husband, had served the community as part of the fire department for many years. And from the look on her face when she opened the door, she truly couldn't have been happier to see so many of the department's current heroes.

Jeanette Carty is no stranger to the Norfolk Fire-Rescue in Norfolk, VA, where she lives.

According to the department's Facebook page, "Norfolk Fire-Rescue has always been part of her life. Her late husband, Joe Carty, served the city for 30 years, starting in 1942; as well as her nephew, Capt. David Bear and his father."

But when Carty opened her front door on the day of her 100th birthday, she received an incredible surprise.

Current members and trainees were lined up outside Carty's house to wish her a very happy birthday.

They also brought her beautiful sunflowers as a way to brighten her day even more.

The smile on Carty's face is impossible to miss!

The department's Facebook page posted, "Yesterday, Mrs. Jeanette Bear Carty turned 100 years old.

"Battalion 3, Engine 11, Recruit class 155 and a few members from training showed up on her doorstep to wish her a happy birthday."

And as these recruits and members lined the sidewalk in front of Carty's house, they honored her in one more special way.

They gave her an enthusiastic round of applause.

Thanks to these amazing heroes, Carty was able to celebrate this important milestone in a beautiful and touching way.

This will not be a birthday that Carty will soon forget!
