Stewart Whitfield, a camera man with Earth Touch, captured this mesmerizing event while diving in Thailand. Stewart sees a group of baby yellowtail kingfish trying to get away from nearby trumpetfish predators. The school of tiny fish hide under the bell of the massive jellyfish, a plan that seems good enough but gets even better when the jellyfish responds. The jellyfish uses its bell to provide a floating safe house around the fish. It's as if the creature is saying, "I'll protect you, babies." An estimate of 95 percent of the ocean is unseen, so when we get little tidbits like this, it's important to cherish them.
This beautiful relationship isn't unheard of either. Crabs, sea spiders, mollusks, brittle stars, and turtles are all known for using jellyfish as cover and "hitchhiking" through the ocean with their protective friends. The baby kingfish even use the jellyfish's stinging threads for food as they nibble on his leftovers. The symbiotic relationship just shows how mother nature has created a seemingly perfect world. Every creature has its place, even if they aren't of the same species; each one exists to care for one another and keep the ecosystem in balance. These precious babies will live another day, thanks to the nurturing jellyfish.
