On Dec. 8, 1980, the world lost a legend. Decades later, John Lennon is still revered as one of the greatest musicians of all time.
The Beatles group member, who was shot and killed near his New York City home at the age of 40, wrote songs that continue to touch the souls of millions.
The first that probably comes to mind for most is "Imagine," a 1970s hit he once beautifully performed with his love Yoko Ono by his side at Madison Square Garden.
Another is the Beatles' "Come Together." The song, identifiable from just the first chord, includes some famous lyrics like, "One thing I can tell you is you got to be free" and, "Got to be good looking 'cause he's so hard to see."
Below we get to relive the day the legend performed the classic tune live in New York City in 1972. (Of course Ono was close by again!) Wearing a pair of his trademark sunglasses, Lennon played the guitar as he belted out the lyrics.
"I nearly got all the words right, too," the British rocker told the audience after the performance. "I have to stop writing those daft words, man. I don't even know what I'm saying. I'm getting old."
