Johnny Cash Performs His Hilarious Hit ‘Boy Named Sue’ In 1969

Country music has a reputation for being, well, kind of depressing. The majority of the genre's songs tend to revolve around themes of heartbreak, tragedy, and loss. Of course, they're performed so beautifully and in such a relatable way that you don't really mind! Especially when it's someone with as much talent as the "Man in Black," Johnny Cash.

As we all know, Cash definitely sang his share of sad songs back in his day. His deep voice perfectly captures the somber mood of each emotional lyric covering every hardship from spending life in prison to pining for a lost love. He was also known to embrace his spiritual side with just as much passion and skill. My favorite moments, however, are those times when the dark crooner would let his silly side show.

I can still remember the first time I heard "Boy Named Sue." I was pretty young and instantly envisioned the sad toddler with the unfortunate moniker. The poor kid wouldn't stand a chance! The hilarious lyrics tell the story of a dad abandoning his small family, but that the "meanest thing that he ever did" was leave his son with the name Sue. As the youngster grows up, he's constantly taunted and teased to the point that he vows to find his father and seek revenge.

He finally gets his chance at the end of the song when the two come face to face. The climactic brawl ends with the man admitting that if he ever has a son himself, he'll probably name it… Bill or George, "anything but Sue!"
