During his prolific career, Johnny Cash became known as the "Man in Black," not just for his iconic clothing choice but for the often dreary tone to his songs. He lived a tumultuous life, losing his brother at a young age and developing a dangerous drug addiction while at the height of his fame. The only thing that was able to save him: faith. Finding spirituality, thanks to a his supportive wife, June Carter Cash, he was able to climb out of the depths of that darkness and bask in a new light with his family.
When he saw his friend and fellow country star Carl Perkins struggling with his own demons, Cash reached out to give him the same support he had relied on to recover. After Perkins was able to kick his alcohol habit, he was so inspired by the life-saving divine intervention Cash introduced to him that he penned this lovely song and offered it to Cash as a thank-you. Sampling a few lyrics from the traditional hymn "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?" Perkins wrote an ode to a family with a foundation built in faith.
"Daddy Sang Bass" features Cash taking the titular bass notes and joined by wife June to take the mom's tenor role. Rounding the rest of the vocals out with help from the Statler Brothers, the uplifting tune is a delightful reminder that our loved ones are always there for us in our times of need.
