Lauryn Lax worked out at the YMCA gym in Nashville, TN. Although gym patrons didn't know Lax very well, they could see that she was rapidly becoming thinner.
This wasn't the kind of weight loss you celebrate — in fact, it seemed that there was cause for concern.
"Her body was just deteriorating, you could see it," gym member Andy Clough told CBS.
"Her eyes were getting kind of gray and sunk in and it didn't look good," Johnny Phipps added.
While many people would simply watch and do nothing, these gym-goers were not of that ilk. The patrons came together and secretly contacted Lax's parents.
Her folks admitted that Lax had been battling anorexia since she was 10 years old. Although she was in and out of treatments for years, none of them really took.
Anorexia is a very serious issue, but it can be overcome; just ask ballet dancer Clarissa May, who beat the condition and went on to success.
They decided to intervene. When Lax came in for her workout, they surrounded her car. They told her firmly that they were taking her to the hospital to get her vitals checked. Lax resisted, cried, and even screamed, "Leave me alone."
They refused to let her get away — until she finally agreed. At the hospital, doctors discovered that her heart had nearly failed. Lax had dropped down to 79 lbs. If they hadn't intervened, she would have died.
Lax is now much healthier. In fact, she shares her story to help others struggling with eating disorders.
