Lawrence Welk Accidentally Pulls The Hair Off His Piano-Playing Guest In 1964

Whenever my brother and I would fight over the remote control while growing up, my mom would remind us that when she was a kid, she never got a choice of what to watch. Her dad kept a tight reign on the TV dial, and there was pretty much only one show playing in their house: The Lawrence Welk Show. Apparently her tough old man had a soft spot for the silly antics you could count on seeing every week on Welk's live variety show.

While today's generation probably only recognizes the name of the show from a hilarious Kristen Wiig spoof on Saturday Night Live, I remember tuning in to reruns as a kid every now and then to see the old-fashioned gowns in glorious Technicolor. Of course, when my mom watched it with her family, it was on their black-and-white set, but that didn't stop sparks from flying between the wacky host and his many guests.

In this classic clip from 1964, Welk invites pianist Jo Ann Castle to perform her toe-tapping "Chopsticks Boogie." As she expertly performs the pumping tune, the host decides to playfully "help" her with her hair. As you can tell, this was back when women believed the bigger the hair, the better. That meant depending on some wigs and extensions to get the volume up as high as humanly possible. Unfortunately, that probably wasn't the best idea for this energetic tune. I don't want to ruin it for you, but just wait until you see what happens about halfway through the clip. Only on live TV, folks!
