Big Sister’s Quick Thinking Saves Little Brother’s Life

In life, you never know when disaster will strike. All we can do is try to keep our wits and be prepared. That's what 17-year-old Ledea Euell did when she heard her mother screaming and running frantically through the halls.

"My mama, she just started screaming," Ledea told WREG's Shay Arthur. "She was running up and down the hallways with him and so she was like, 'He can't breathe, call 911.'" Somehow, Ledea kept her cool. She laid her baby brother on the couch, put her finger on his chest, and pressed down on it 10 times. Then she held his head back and performed mouth-to-mouth CPR. All of this, the entire process, was something she was taught in health class three years before. In that moment, the steps all came flooding back.

The baby boy, Major, had been born two weeks early. Ledea's aunt, Tamala, who is a nurse — it must run in the family — said premies often have weak lungs. Thanks to this big sister's quick thinking, her brother is OK. Now Ledea is encouraging others to learn infant CPR

"It's like something I just always keep in the back of my mind," Ledea said.
