Throughout the day, we may pass judgment on strangers for one reason or another, but we must always remember that everyone has a story.
For Marc Muszynski, life's challenges have caused him to go through life lying to people. The reason? He has cone-rod dystrophy, a genetic retinal disorder that begins with the loss of visual acuity and is followed by night blindness and loss of peripheral vision. For him, he'd rather lie about his disability than tell people about it.
"I don't want to call that much attention. There is a serious embarrassment level to it…So often, I'd rather be perceived as slightly awkward than handicapped," he admits in the video.
Despite having the disorder, he's living in Los Angeles and employed by the LA Philharmonic as a digital content manager. The video, created by BuzzFeed, follows him around for the day as he experiences life. At one point, he goes to a bar and orders a drink. He can't see what's available, but refuses to admit to the bartender that he can't actually see. Instead he just says he forgot his glasses as the two have an awkward exchange.
"I don't know why I don't just say I can't see well. I think people understand 'Forgot my glasses' so quickly that it doesn't require any explaining," he says.
Muszynski hopes this video helps viewers to better understand what it's like to go blind — how it feels and how it affects his daily life.
