Deep below the surface of Paris' bustling streets, hundreds of miles of tunnels wind their way into a labyrinth of mass graves. The Catacombs of Paris have been used for a number of purposes over the course of many centuries, but are most notable for their history as an alternative to overcrowding of Paris' cemeteries.
It was in these passages that mysterious footage was discovered by recreational explorers of the tunnels. The strange footage seems to suggest that a man had wandered into the Catacombs on his own, became lost and terrified by someone or something, and possibly disappeared; what become of him remains unknown.
Francis Freeland is a freelance filmmaker who was shown the footage on Syfy’s Ghost Hunters. Reviewing the footage, Freeland appears just as baffled by what could have driven the man to abandon his camera and take off running without a source of light.
"He’s frightened. Occasionally he stops, perhaps to try to decide which way to run among all the many different corridors," says Freeland. "He's running faster and faster and faster, deeper and deeper into the catacombs. And all of a sudden, he drops the camera. The camera just dropped on the ground and keeps rolling, and you see his feet just run away."
Determined himself to solve the mystery of what he called "very bizarre" footage, Freeland commissioned a group of explorers of the Catacombs, referred to as cataphiles, to see if they could trace the man's journey.
