People opt to downgrade to smaller homes for a variety of reasons: save money, live more environment-friendly lifestyles, be closer to their children, and some people even move into smaller dwellings to prepare for worst-case scenarios.
Americans have been building fallout shelters for decades, especially when the Cold War brought along the threat of nuclear attacks. These rooms tended to be industrial, bare, and little attention was paid to the idea of making it comfortable.
But a company called Luxury Survival Condos plans to change that. They have remodeled an old, underground Atlas silo into a large condo building that is tough enough to withstand the worse possible conditions. They are looking to build a community of like-minded people who aren't "survival nuts," but want to be safe in the face of disaster.
Honestly, these condos are nicer than some of my friends' apartments here in New York City.
I never imagined that I could enjoy the "end of the world" next to my pool or while working out in the gym…

The first silo design has already sold out, and they are currently selling units in their second structure.

There are penthouse units, full-floor units, and half-floor units.

The walls around the silo are up to nine feet thick to protect the interiors from any sort of attack.

The units start at 900 square feet.

The interiors are all modern and fully functional.

There are redundant electric and water sources, with a 75,000-gallon tank of reserve water.

There is air filtration, and there will even be farming for sustainability.

Each professionally designed unit comes with modern amenities and stainless steel appliances. They also come with their own reserve of food to last for five years.

The building is looking to tenants who can appreciate that they will need to be an extended family and work together.

Each unit sleeps at least five people — though up to ten people can share the larger units.

They are one of the only companies building survival shelters that are intended for long-term use.

The company believes that operating in "disaster mode" should not also be uncomfortable.

In addition to the residential units, the silo has a gym, general store, first aid center, spa, and pool...

...as well as classrooms and learning centers.

Thus, the complex is looking for tenants from a variety of professional fields.

It also has a control center to monitor that the building is functioning properly, as well as what is happening outside.

There's even a general store and movie theater. It's essentially a small town in one building!

The complex is guarded by military-level security, and all applicants are screened for criminal backgrounds.

Honestly? It's nicer than a lot of the apartments I've seen!
