Sometimes, life throws things at us that feel practically impossible to overcome. But when the right people come into our lives with a watchful eye and generous spirit, it can remind us that good people do exist in the world.
Andrew Russell was a letter carrier working for the United States Postal Service. He had only been on the job a couple of months, but he was always happy to come to work as he had a family to support at home.
In high school, Andrew had dreams of doing something more heroic with his career, but similar to a lot of individuals out there, life had a different plan for him and he ended up becoming a mail carrier to make some much-needed money. Little did he know that one day on the job, he would be called a hero.
According to Denver7 News, Andrew had been on the job for less than two months in Wheat Ridge, Colorado, when he was completing one of his usual routes and sensed something was very wrong.
As he got closer to a parked car, Andrew told Denver7 that he heard a child screaming, “My mommy’s dead!” and knew he needed to act fast. He “immediately ran over there and dropped [his] mail in this lady’s front yard” and retrieved a child from the backseat of the parked vehicle. When he checked on her mother, she was slumped over and unresponsive.

According to Wheat Ridge Police, who spoke to Denver7 News, the child’s mother had overdosed on a fentanyl pill. The child told police that her “mother wasn’t breathing” and authorities are thankful that Andrew happened to be on his usual route and paying attention when all of this happened.
