When Kathy Rackley bumped into a young college student at a Barnes & Noble and told him about her book club, she was shocked when he asked if he could join. She couldn't understand why he'd want to spend his free time with 40-, 50-, and 60-year-old ladies when he could be out partying with his University of Georgia peers. It wasn't until she learned his identity that her jaw practically hit the floor.
This young man who loves to read, whom she meets with every month, is in fact Malcolm Mitchell — the #1 rated wide receiver in college football, and a local Georgia celebrity.
But when Malcolm arrived on campus in 2011, he had a secret he wasn't proud of; the all-star athlete had the reading level of a middle school student. Promising himself he was going to learn to read at a higher level, Malcolm started picking up books whenever and wherever he could.
For a man known for his interceptions and rushing yards, he says his greatest accomplishment is the fact he completed The Hunger Games trilogy in just two days.
If this story doesn't make you all warm and fuzzy inside, nothing will. Cheers to Malcolm for becoming a proud lifelong learner!
