The breathtaking Niagara Falls aren’t the highest falls in the world, but they’re exceptionally wide. And powerful! On average, more than four million cubic feet of water flows from the crest line every minute.
However, due to the extra frosty chill we’re experiencing in the northeastern United States, Niagara Falls has been seeing significantly less water flow.
Why?
Because some parts of the falls have actually frozen over!
It's surprisingly quite lovely. The ice-covered falls look fanciful, like jagged, glacier-dripped icicles gorgeous enough to adorn the palace of any ice queen.
And the sense of whimsy these frozen falls emit inspired one adventurer, Will Gadd, to climb them. That’s right, we’ve heard of people going down these falls in barrels, but never someone climbing up them! That's because no one had ever attempted it before.
Snow-climber Gadd, who is a triple gold medalist at the X Games, felt he was well-suited for the challenge…and he is!
Watch him make history as the first person to climb the falls in the video below, which is quite a sight to see. Just imagine it! It's like man vs. nature as he climbs up a frozen waterfall while feeling the strength of gushing water from other falls beside him. Imagine how small he must have felt. How cold. And how satisfying it must have been to reach the top.
