We're always taught not to judge a book by its cover, both literally and metaphorically speaking, but we've all probably been guilty of doing just that from time to time. We might not even realize it when it happens, but a subtle look or glare of judgment escapes from our demeanor regardless.
My dad used to have to deal with that all the time as a big, burly, tattooed biker guy. Dressed in his leather jacket covered patches, a bushy beard, and a gritty face, he was admittedly pretty intimidating. But really, it was just a giant softie who would melt in an instant at the sight of one of our tiny, maltipoo puppies. Looks can be so deceiving, which is what makes the system of blind auditions on The Voice so impressive and unique.
Watching Matthew Garwood walk on the stage in Australia, you would probably expect him to launch into a punk or rock tune. Covered in vibrant tattoos, a few piercings, and dark clothing, that definitely would seem in character. Instead, though, the singer chose an emotional ballad from The Phantom of the Opera, "All I Ask of You."
With their chairs in the opposite direction, though, all the judges know is how crisp and pristine his vocals are as he croons the lyrics. It doesn't take long for Ricky Martin to decide to finish out his team by slamming his hand on the buzzer. The look on his face when he sees Garwood standing there is totally priceless! And the rest of the judges are just as gobsmacked.
