One 18-year-old senior decided to come out to his parents in a very clever way: his yearbook quote.
Maxwell Barrett, a student from Raritan High School in Hazlet, NJ, wrote: "Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.”
Similarly to Chloe Cross who posted her women empowerment yearbook quote on social media, Barrett shared his quote on Twitter on June 9 and quickly garnered a lot of attention. He's received over 3,000 retweets and media coverage.
While most people knew he was gay, Barrett had never confirmed his sexuality to his parents. But, unlike his parents who praised him for the quote, some school supervisors weren’t pleased. One teacher almost prevented the quote from making it into the yearbook, as was recently the case with a student from California’s Lincoln High.
"I had a sit-down with the teacher of the club and she told me she didn't like the quote and that I was trying to give myself too much 'shock value,’” he told The Huffington Post.
After some petitioning, Barrett’s quote was published under his dapper photo as originally planned. Turns out, his intention was just like many other high school students.
"I wanted to go out with a bang," he said. "I had never done sports, or clubs. I was always just an art student. I wanted to go out in a way people would remember me by!"
