Not all heroes wear capes. Most are walking among us every day. This was evident last month in Fenton, Michigan. Two brothers, ages 12 and 8, saw their neighbor fall into the apartment complex pool and sink to the bottom. They did not hesitate to jump into action pulling the 7-year-old out of the water.
The boys were able to hand him to his mother, who performed CPR until first responders arrived. He was taken to a hospital and made a full recovery. Police and all involved in this case came together to honor the two young heroes.
"Griffin had a little problem in the swimming pool," Griffin's grandfather stated during a Facebook Live by the Genesee County Sheriff's Office. "And these two young men right here saved him, got him from the bottom of the pool and brought him to the side of the pool. They're my heroes."
Sheriff Chris Swanson led the festivities honoring the boys. He was full of high fives and even better, prizes. He gave the boys books and $100 to spend however they please.

A new report by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission found an average of 371 pool or spa related fatal drownings occurred each year between the years of 2018 and 2020. Some ways to prevent these deaths include learning CPR, teaching children to swim, and making sure a responsible adult or lifeguard is present. Floaties are also great tools, but should not be overly relied upon.
