Artist Creates Beautiful Portrait With Over A Million Tiny Dots

When I moved to a different town in high school, I was frustrated to find my new scholastic setting came with an art class requirement. Not that I have anything against art — quite the opposite, in fact. I love spending time at museums or scrolling through images of classic works on the web. However, I was definitely not blessed with even a smidgen of artistic talent.

Our lesson on pointillism that year was a particularly painful one for me to complete. Even though we were basically tracing images onto glass, the method of doing so with only itty-bitty dots was definitely exhausting for me and my lack of skill. The technique might sound simple at first, but when you start looking at how to shade and contour your design, things can get pretty tricky.

Clearly, the gentleman in the video below knows exactly what he's doing as he begins his project. I'm honestly really jealous of folks with this level of talent. Along with fellow artists like Russell Powell and Cayce Zavaglia, David Bayo is able to create stunningly realistic portraits in a beautifully unique way. As he explains in the video description, the portrait consists of over a million of the petite dots and took him roughly 90 hours (not to mention a few headaches) to complete.

I couldn't tear my eyes away as he carefully applies the slightest amount of pressure to his pen to form each speck. Keeping the camera close throughout the process, he reveals glimpses of the gorgeous result as he continues to add details.
