Remains Of 2-Month-Old Found Following Arrest Of Mom, 35, And Her Boyfriend

A case of suspected child neglect has come to a tragic ending across the pond in England. Both authorities and those following along at home had hoped for a happier one.

On February 27, 2023, Constance Marten, 35, and her boyfriend, Mark Gordon, 48, were arrested on suspicion of child neglect after leading authorities on a 53-day manhunt. After the arrest, authorities searched for their baby. The remains of a 2-month-old baby were found in Brighton near where the arrest was made.

Lewis Basford from London's Metropolitan Police confirmed these developments. "Police officers searching a wooded area close to where Constance Marten and Mark Gordon were arrested, discovered the remains of a baby. A post-mortem examination will be held in due course,” he stated.

"This is an outcome that myself and the many officers who have been part of the search, had hoped would not happen," he went on to say. "I recognize the impact this news will have on the many people who have been following this story closely, and can assure them that we will do everything we possibly can to establish what has happened."

Marten and Gordon remain in custody because police applied for a 36-hour extension to their detention so that authorities could further investigate the case. Marten comes from an aristocratic British family. Gordon is a convicted sex offender. Beyond their initial arrest, they were additionally arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter.
