A mom who was spending time with her family in a popular tourist destination in France was killed in a Jet Ski collision involving her twin daughters. On Sunday, August 4, 2024, the 47-year-old woman was riding a personal watercraft with her 48-year-old partner. Their two 16-year-old daughters were riding another water scooter alongside them, and the two vessels collided with each other.
The exact cause of the crash is unclear, though it is believed that one of the family members could've lost control of their water scooter, reported The Connexion.

According to the outlet, emergency services responded to the crash in Arcachon Bay, but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Her partner and two daughters survived the crash and were taken to the hospital with injuries. Though the two daughters reportedly sustained severe injuries, they were not in critical condition.
French law requires people to be at least 16 years old before operating a personal watercraft. Additionally, Jet Ski drivers must have a boat license or be under an instructor's supervision, per The Times. According to the outlet, the family involved in the collision had been supervised by an instructor.
The accident has sparked discussions about water scooter safety, and whether or not more restrictions are needed.

Sammy Maysonnave, winner of the French Jet Ski championship in 2022, told Sud Ouest that fatal water scooter accidents are rare. However, he still believes that more training for riders could be beneficial and might reduce the number of accidents.
He is also pushing for helmet mandates. “Helmets should be compulsory, it’s basic,” he told the publication.
