For eight months, Angie was depressed and terrified for the birth of her twins. 12 weeks into her pregnancy, doctors revealed that her boys were conjoined at their "safety sac." However, scans revealed two hearts instead of one, which increased their chances of survival greatly. Scans also revealed the babies holding hands in the womb. Still, Angie, a mother of two girls, was in a very dark place. "Your two big sisters got me through the worst / I really felt that I'd been cursed."
Hassan and Hussein were born in 2010, and Angie instantly fell in love with them. She realized this was no curse; instead, she'd been blessed with the greatest gift of all. Now, she and her family needed a miracle for the pair of "little fighters" as the boys prepared for their final battle — they were scheduled to be separated during a risky 14-hour surgical procedure. "No matter how this will all end I'm forever grateful for the time we did spend," Angie said.
Seven weeks after a successful surgery, Hassan and Hussein returned home, each boy missing one leg but still stronger than ever. Doctors were blown away by the twins' speedy recovery and progress. After taking their country by storm, the Benhaffaf family was awarded the 2010 Special Merit Award for showing outstanding courage and bravery during the pregnancy, birth, and operation.
