For young children with cancer or any other debilitating disease keeping them out of school, it's hard to keep up a sense of normalcy. And for these kids, besides getting healthier, this part of life is one of the more important. Wigs can be made to replace the hair they lost, for example, but their presence in the classroom is indispensable, not just for the patient, but also for the patient's young classmates.
The amazing program Monkey In My Chair helps young students like Rhyan still be present with the classroom. The plush monkey takes her seat in her kindergarden class to connect her to her peers, and for the other students to better understand the young girl's fight with cancer. The monkey is a stand-in for Rhyan when she can't be physically present. The toy even comes with a backpack in which her classmates put her homework, and manuals to help teachers explain the monkey's presence.
The plush monkey is carried everywhere the students go, as if Rhyan were with them! Although the students understand that the toy does not replace the little girl, the program offers a great way for all the youngsters to understand Rhyan's absence.
