It's so awesome to hear stories about families who adopt children from other countries, no matter the child's skin color. Sadly, there was a time when interracial adoption was illegal and seen as a hindrance to a child finding his or her true identity. In 1967, a Supreme Court Case in Virginia ruled that the ban on interracial adoption was unconstitutional — but it was still prohibited in many other states.
16 years later in the state of California, Tameka Jacobs was born addicted to drugs; her biological mother was high when she gave birth. Tameka was taken into foster care by a white woman, Mary Brown. By the time Tameka was 3 years old, she was at the center of a groundbreaking custody case. Mary fought desperately to adopt Tameka, but California law banned interracial adoption. She ultimately lost her case and was forced to give up her precious child. Tameka was adopted by an African-American family, which the court deemed more "suitable."
As Tameka grew older, she discovered some amazing information about her biological family.
