There are hundreds of horse breeds out there, so it's no wonder that these incredible animals come in so many shapes, sizes, and colors. From massive draft horses to itty bitty ponies, there's an equine for everyone out there! But some horse breeds have such unique characteristics that they look like something straight out of a story book.
We've seen some pretty special horses before. This adorable foal has a horse-shaped marking on his neck…and a heart-shaped patch on his hindquarters! Even though there are plenty of horses and ponies that have beautiful and special qualities, it can be even cooler to see entire breeds that share the same awesome qualities. They didn't start that way, though — just like these gorgeous hybrid equines, all of the horse breeds we know and love are the result of years and years of careful breeding. It's crazy to think about how far they've come!
While all horses are stunning animals, you need to see these gorgeous breeds. Number 8 has been my dream horse since I was a little girl, but honestly, I'd be happy just to be able to pet any of them. Which one is your favorite? It's hard to decide when all of them are so beautiful!

1. Bashkir Curly
One look at their hair will tell you how these horses got their name. The Bashkir Curly horse is characterized by the curls in its mane, eyelashes, and even the insides of its ears. The tightness of the curls depends on each individual horse. The Bashkir Curly is also said to be hypoallergenic, so even people who normally can't control their sneezes around horses would feel just fine around these unique equines!
2. Marwari
The Bashkir Curly might have curly hair, but the Marwari horse actually has curly ears. They've been around since the 12th century, when they were used as cavalry horses, but today, most people just ride them for fun.
3. Norwegian Fjord
Fans of the Disney movie Frozen will recognize these unique horses right away. Their stocky build and two-toned manes and tails make them extremely distinctive. Their manes will grow in long and thick if you let them, but many people crop them to really emphasize their unique coloring.
4. Ahkal-Teke
You might never find an actual unicorn, but the Akhal-Teke is about as close as you'll get. These naturally slender horses are best known for their shiny, almost metallic-looking coats. This is caused by the opaque core of the hair being smaller than normal, or even nonexistent in some instances. The transparent portion of the hair bends light as it comes through, giving the coat a beautiful sheen that is best seen in horses with a more golden hue, such as buckskins and cremellos.
5. Rocky Mountain Horse
Rocky Mountain horses are known for their beautiful flaxen manes and tails, which provide a stark contrast to their normally chocolate-colored coats. But their coloring isn't their only unique feature; These horses also have a unique gait that is slightly slower than a trot, but far more comfortable. Many riders say they don't bounce at all when riding a Rocky!
6. American Cream Draft Horse
The American Cream is the only existing draft horse that originated in the United States (most come from Europe). Most horses within this breed are characterized by their light coloring, known as "gold champagne," and their amber eyes. There are some American Creams that are chestnut in color, but they are far more uncommon.
7. Exmoor Pony
The Exmoor pony is a semi-feral type of horse that's been around since about 700,000 B.C. The ponies are considered endangered, but conservation efforts have been put in place to protect the breed. Their stocky build, thick manes and tails, and unique coloring (which includes light muzzles and eye areas) make them very distinctive animals.
8. Gypsy Vanner
These beautiful horses were once used by the Romanichal people to pull their wheeled homes (hence their names). They're known for their black and white piebald coat pattern (although they can be any color) and the "feathers" that cover their large hooves.
9. Przewalski's Horse
The only breed of horse that has never been domesticated, the Przewalski's horse is a rare and endangered animal that was once extinct in the wild. They've been reintroduced to their native Mongolian habitat after being successfully bred in captivity.
10. Falabella
Even though they normally stand at a maximum of eight hands tall, the Falabella is still considered to be a horse rather than a pony. They're too tiny to ride (unless you're a very small child), but they can still perform in hand-led activities such as jumping. Many of them have even been trained to be seeing-eye horses!
11. Appaloosa
The appaloosa isn't a rare horse, but its wide variety of colorful coat patterns is still something to behold. Their spots can range from small to large (or even nonexistent) and cover any part of their bodies. These horses may also have striped hooves and an almost cartoonish-looking amount of white around their eyes.
12. Friesian
Once a powerful war horse, Friesians are now used as pleasure and show horses. The breed looks like something straight out of a medieval fantasy story, with their large stature, flowing manes and tails, and feathered legs. They're also almost exclusively black — most of them don't have even small white markings.
