Some of the most amazing unexplained mysteries continue to baffle historians.
How did the Egyptians manage to have such sophisticated construction and astrological technology as to be able to construct the pyramids? Where did the lost city of Atlantis disappear to and how?
I love a good mystery. As a result, I have always been drawn to the mysterious stone heads that are scattered all over Easter Island. But when I found out what archaeologists found by doing a little digging beneath the statue heads? I was floored.
Easter Island is small island located 2,000 miles off the west coast of Chile in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Like me, you may not be very familiar with the island, but you may have seen pictures of the famous moai stone statues that are scattered all over it. I knew they looked like a bunch of giant heads. But what I didn't know? The heads are just the tip of the iceberg. Below the surface of the ground, archaeologists have unearthed so much more.

Easter Island may be a tiny island of only 64 square miles, but it boasts 887 massive stone statues known as moai. These strange, giant heads were carved out of volcanic rock somewhere between the year 1100 and the year 1680.

But what are these statues, and why were they built? Their true purpose still remains a mystery. As a result, archaeologists have spent years exploring the enormous stone heads and Easter Island has become an enormous tourist attraction.

What tourists didn't know? Beneath the stone heads were actually enormous stone bodies as well. About 150 of the statues have been buried on the side of a volcano with only the heads peeking out about the ground!

While archaeologists have known about this surprising secret since the early 1900s, they aren't quite sure exactly how many moai have yet to even be discovered. They believe that there may be over 100 more statues that are completely hidden underneath the surface of the island!

People around the world remain fascinated by the unearthing of these statues. Images of the surprising bodies of these enormous moai began going viral as early as 2012. As a result, the Easter Island Statue Project's website received over three million hits and crashed as a result!
With archaeologists finally documenting and sharing photos of the complete moai, much has been revealed about them to the public. The statues average about 13 feet in height and weight about 13 tons each!

At such an enormous size, much mystery remains surrounding exactly how the moai were moved around the island, particularly with the technology of the time.

Questions also swirl around precisely how these moai were crafted so precisely. Easter Island was formed entirely by a series of volcanic eruptions, so all of the statues were somehow carved from the hardened volcanic ash. This would be quite a feat for anyone, particularly an ancient civilization.
Today, thousands of visitors flock to see the moai of Easter Island, and the Easter Island Statue Project has been working tirelessly to uncover and document more of the buried statues. Perhaps they will bring us a little closer to solving one of the most
