The Native American hoop dance represents everyone's journey through the circle of life. According to Brian Hammil we all carry a hoop that holds our memories, goals, and life achievements. Our hoops weave together throughout our lives, and when everyone comes together a very beautiful and sacred thing happens, we create the world that we live in.
The hoop dance represents a whole story of the world, humans, animals, nature, and time; a Native American warrior goes on a journey and learns about the meaning of life.
Brian Hammil was born as a member of the proud Ho-chunk nation; when he was 17 years old he joined the United States Army and served for 6 years with honors. Over time he managed to become an accomplished hoop dancer, spreading his Native American culture to people all over the nation.
By upholding his tradition, he's also made a name for himself, winning multiple awards in the hoop dancing community. Hoop dancers from all over show off their beautiful dancing skills and footwork, dancing with as few as four hoops and as many as 50, forming amazing designs of animals and other artistic flourishes in the dance.
Dancers are judged depending on their footwork, rhythm to the music, showmanship, creativeness, and speed, and when you watch Brian's performance, you'll easily see why he's won so many world titles!
Please watch his beautiful dance to help keep his culture alive and strong!
