To become a United States Navy SEAL is one of the most difficult dreams that anyone could ever imagine to have in their life. As if regular boot camp weren't hard enough, this elite group of warriors have dreamed their whole lives to reach the pinnacle of what it means to be a warrior.
These specialists know every trick in the book; from how to live off the land to how to fight in the sea, these brave SEALS are world-renowned for being the elite of the elite of the elite. Not only do these warriors have to be the physically perfect and able-bodied, but they also have to be highly intelligent, charismatic, self-confident and unbelievably brave.
So anyone who has earned the right to be called a SEAL is pretty impressive by all standards. But for Senior Chief Edward C. Byers Jr., he dreamed a little bit bigger. He was chosen to be a part of the legendary SEAL Team 6, the same group of elite fighters that took out bin Laden. Byers wanted to make his daughter proud and serve his country well.
But it was on a rescue mission in Afghanistan that he truly proved how brave he really is. The Taliban was holding an American doctor hostage, and they were threatening to take his life. But the Taliban wasn't aware that SEAL Team 6 was silently speeding their way.
The team broke into the house where the doctor was being held, and after taking out an enemy, Byers had to resort to hand-to-hand combat as bullets flew all around him. In the middle of his fight with a terrorist, he saw another terrorist raising a gun at the doctor, and that's when he ran away from the man he was fighting (the only time in history he's ever run from a fight) and jumped in front of the doctor to take the bullets.
Somehow, Byers saved the doctor and lived to tell the tale. And for his actions, he's being awarded the Medal of Honor. But just like you'd expect from someone in the military, he remains humble, as if this were simply just a regular job on a regular day.
