83-Year-Old Woman Has Last Laugh With Self-Penned Obituary

When a loved one passes away, it can take a long time before feeling joy again. This story is about a beloved mother and grandmother who died, leaving behind a heartfelt chuckle for her family that would keep them smiling forever.

Norma Brewer passed away from a stroke at the age of 83. Though she was confined to a wheelchair for the last year of her life, she never lost her sense of humor and love of pranks. After her passing, her family realized she had had the last laugh by penning her own obituary in the Connecticut Post newspaper.

Her obituary, which she penned more than a decade before she died, stated: "Norma Rae Flicker Brewer, a resident of Fairfield, passed away while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. She never realized her life goal of reaching the summit, but made it to the base camp. Her daughter, Donna, her dog Mia, and her cats, came along at the last minute. There is suspicion that Mrs. Brewer died from hypothermia after Mia ate Mrs. Brewer's warm winter boots and socks."

The obituary went on to state that Norma's father had been the president and publisher of the Connecticut Post, which was true. This prompted some people to theorize that Norma was trying to test the paper's fact-checkers. While her son Raymond said that could be the case, "It had more to do with the way she viewed the world. While life is serious it shouldn't be taken all that serious. It was her way of having one last joke with the world."
