Turn An Old Oil Barrel Into A Grill With This Awesome DIY Project

Considering how wasteful our world is, it's no surprise that our landfills are overflowing with trash and oozing with pollution. Nowadays, everything is cheap, disposable, and tossed right out the door.

But thankfully, the upcycling movement is beginning to make waves, inspiring people to think twice before throwing out their old possessions. Suddenly, thanks to some very creative minds, barn windows are becoming coffee tables and old end tables are giving dogs a good night's sleep.

However, of all the very imaginative up-cycles I've seen, nothing compares to this stunning transformation. Who knew a yucky old barrel could become a beautiful summertime staple?

This just goes to show that anything can be reused and recycled. You just need some patience, a little muscle, and a lot of imagination — and before you know it, your old furniture will have a whole new lease on life.

When he found an old motor oil barrel, this Imgur user decided to give it a second chance at life — this time, as a grill! But it would need a lot of work before it was ready for a cookout. He began the barrel's transformation by first giving it a deep and thorough cleaning.

To do this, he filled the barrel with sand to absorb any remaining oil. Next, he added soap and water, then rigorously shook it. After letting it soak overnight — and letting it dry out thoroughly — you would never guess it had ever held oil.

When it was clean, he got to sanding. After many passes with the sander and a steel brush, the barrel was shiny and paint-free.

The next step was to open up the barrel. To do this, he first marked out his cuts with painter's tape.

With some lubricant and a jigsaw, he made his cuts.

The jigsaw cut through very easily.

To his surprise, the cuts were very clean.

When the cutting was done, he took both barrel pieces and sprayed them with heat-resistant paint.

As that dried, he cut some pieces of Douglas fir for the grill's body.

He then began to build the frame.

Once the body was built, he sanded and stained it.

Finally, it was time to lay the barrel in. It fit very nicely.

He then hinged the two barrel pieces back together. He also added a steel handle for easy lifting and closing.

He drilled quite a few air intake holes around the body of the barrel.
