This Backyard Tiny House May Look Small, But Then I Saw Inside And… WOW!

Home ownership is a rewarding — yet pricy — investment.

According to the National Association of Realtors, the median price of an existing home sold in the U.S. in 2014 was $188,900. To some that may be a drop in a bucket, and to others the kind of price that may make them kick the bucket.

Due to the abundance of people in the latter camp, a lot of folks are opting to live in tiny houses, which offer a lot of financial flexibility.

Yet, there are a lot of cash-saving incentives of tiny house living other than the fact that they're smaller and thus cheaper to make. Some tiny houses are mobile, so you don’t have to pay for property, and other couples are opting to save construction costs by building their tiny houses themselves, like Dee Williams of Olympia, WA, who built her own tiny house in a friend’s backyard.

One young couple, Brendon and Akua, is doing something similar by building a tiny house of their own in their parents’ backyard. The couple goes on quite an adventure to do this, but the result? Wow…

Here is the tiny plot of backyard land that Brendon and Akua started with, which is in Brendon’s parents’ backyard.

The 500-square-foot house was designed and constructed with the help of Smallworks Studios/Laneway Housing in Vancouver.

Brendon and Akua went with Laneway’s West Coast Loft model, which features a loft bedroom, luxurious kitchen, living area with balcony, and a garage.

When the couple decided to switch from being renters to tiny house homeowners, they also lost 200 square feet of space, which meant getting rid of some of stuff.

This included a collection of Garbage Pale Kid collecting cards and over 50 Smurfs figurines.

Still, it was well worth it to achieve the dream of home ownership.

The couple put a lot of love, sweat, and tears into the home, and the final result was definitely worth the investment.

The house has a flat roof, so they can easily add solar panels or even a living roof in the future.
