When I was a kid, rainy days were my absolute favorite kind of day. While most kids were bummed to be barred from riding bikes or playing tag, I was elated for an excuse to stay inside.
And while I was happily stuck inside, one of my favorite things to do was color. Even to this day, coloring remains one of my secret relaxing pastimes.
But sometimes, crayons can be a bit of a pain. They break and grow dull, and their shape can be challenging for little fingers. Before you know it, you have more crayon nubs than you have full crayons.
That's why this DIY project is ingenious. Thanks to this bright idea from Momtastic, you won't have to buy a new box of crayons for quite some time. Now, you'll know exactly what to do with all those old crayon pieces. Kids will love the look and feel of these, and you'll love saving money. Step 1: Gather your materials. You'll need four old pill bottles (well-washed), four tin cans, and broken old crayons (of the same color).

Step 2: Choose your first color. Peel off the paper wrapper, then break it into smaller pieces.

Step 3: Place the broken pieces in the bottom of your first can.

Step 4: Fill a saucepan with a few inches of water. When it reaches a boil, gently place the tin in the water; make sure the waterline meets the line of the crayons. Keep a close eye on the saucepan and tin.

Step 5: Once the crayons are completely melted, quickly pour the wax into the empty pill bottles. Make sure you pour equal parts into each. Allow the wax to harden and cool.

Step 6: Once the first layer of wax has hardened, repeat steps 1–5 with other colors. You can make as many layers as you like — but be sure to use a new tin each time you melt a new color.

Step 7: Carefully pop out the hardened wax layers, and voila! A chunky rainbow crayon perfect for toddler hands!

Easy to color with and fun to stack, toddlers will love to play with these on rainy, quiet days.

Now you know what to do with all those old, broken crayon pieces! Isn't it genius?
