This has to be one of my all-time favorite videos that I've ever gotten the privilege of watching in my entire life.
From the wonderful BBC/Discovery series Planet Earth, narrated by David Attenborough, these stunning images took incredible amounts of patience to finally capture on film. The cameraman had to sit for weeks on end in a cramped and tiny blind, hidden away in the jungles of the great island of Papua New Guinea.
As the cameraman waited and waited, the 1984 hit song "Bird of Paradise" by Snowy White began to play over and over again in his head. Days began to drag by with no sound or site of any of these beautiful birds.
But then, seemingly out of nowhere, his patience paid off. The superb bird of paradise suddenly flew into view, cleaning and arranging his space. It was mating season for this beautiful little guy, and they like to make sure that their dancing area is clear of any rocks or broken sticks that could get in the way of their display.
Along with the cameraman, the male bird waited and waited for a female to show up. When she finally did, in her brown plumage, the overzealous male began to perform one of the most bizarrely beautiful displays that nature has to offer.
All of the birds in this amazing video are beautiful in their own special way, and this clip — along with the whole Planet Earth series in general — is well worth watching.
