Several months back, video of a tortilla spinning on a record player with "Jarabe Tapatio" playing in the background went viral — with over 1.2 million and counting — views on YouTube. Inspired to do something more amazing, one investor set out to create an actual playable record out of a tortilla.
"I thought I could do that video one better," UpgradeTech wrote on Reddit. "I was already familiar with laser cutting records at 78 rpm on acrylic for use in gramophones … I decided to see if I could make it work on an actual tortilla."
Using an uncooked tortilla and a laser cutter, he got to work. According to the inventor, it takes about half an hour to make a 7" record that lasts around 30 seconds.
He added: "The tortillas are edible, but taste rather burnt where the laser has to work harder to slice apart the edges."
Although the music is a little shaky, you have to admit it's surprisingly clear for it being made of flour! It's pretty brilliant. He has gone on to create a series of videos — all with different songs to test out if it'd actually work over time. (*Spoiler alert: It does. And it's amazing!)
