Vera-Ellen Tap Dances Her Heart Out In This Scene From ‘White Christmas’

Watching big musical numbers from the middle of the past century is truly mesmerizing. You just don't see the stars of films tap dancing across a stage with a huge chorus behind them anymore. And the costumes? Tulle, sequins, satin, fishnets and sashes galore! Every frame of these movies is like a carefully constructed painting; the colors, costumes, and choreography is all so incredible to look at.

When Vera-Ellen hit the stage, there was no looking away. With legs for miles and a shining smile to boot, she was a star from the very beginning. She was just made to star in the glitzy, glamorous motion pictures and television of her time. Over the span of her career, she starred in many films and appeared on stages all over, while occasionally appearing on television, too.

In the 1954 film White Christmas, Vera-Ellen starred alongside Bing Crosby as well as Danny Kaye, and she got to show off what she was best known for: her dancing. One of the most exciting numbers in the film is the minstrel number, when she dons a glittering white bodysuit and sings a song about wedding rings with a full chorus of ladies wearing red and men in bright green suits. The song may be about wedding bells, but the whole number makes you think of jingle bells!
