Amy Larcinese, the principal of HW Good Elementary in western Pennsylvania, was surprised when a total stranger walked into her elementary school last week. Larcinese still doesn't know who the stranger is, but she's now referring to him as her school's "secret Santa."
That's because after he entered the school unannounced, the man offered to pay for all the outstanding overdue lunch balances. More than 40 students benefited from the man's generosity. All together, he paid off $864 of kids' lunch money.
According to CNN, "Nearly half the kids at the school are from financially struggling families and qualify for free and reduced school lunches."
Around the holidays, when so many surprise expenses pop up — gifts, travel, food — some of the kids' lunch balances go into the negative.
This stranger wanted to relieve the burden for families at HW Good Elementary.
On top of providing $864 to pay off the overdue balances, he also "offered to provide funds to cover one child's lunch for the rest of the school year."
Taking away the cost of school lunches means that parents can focus on providing for their children outside of school — whatever that means for their family.
The school plans on sending letters to all the families who were helped by the secret Santa.
They won't reveal his identity, but they know the parents and children will be grateful for his kind act.
