One of the main reasons I moved to New York was so I would never have to be behind the wheel of a car again. I enjoy the ride, but you never know what kind of distractions might come up and cause mayhem. I don't just mean texting and driving, but even more absurd things like the two bear cubs who decided a highway was the best place to stop for some playtime. Since I'm already pretty easy to sidetrack, it's better for everyone that I live here now.
However, I am definitely thinking about finding a friend to sit in the driver's seat for a trip to the incredible road shown in the video below! Located in picturesque Tijeras, NM, it's more than just the gorgeous view that makes this strip of concrete so special. In an effort to slow down drivers from speeding down the busy road, the New Mexico Department of Transportation worked with the National Geographic Society to create a "singing" road.
That's right, the rumble strips on the side of the road actually produce music when driven over at exactly 55 miles per hour. Instead of caution signs that are all too easily ignored, the novelty gives drivers a reason to keep a safe, steady pace. The grooves in the road are similar to those in a record and plays the patriotic tune, "America the Beautiful."
The section was created in 2014 and is one of only four examples found across the world.
