Bachelor Cop’s Good Deed Turns Him Into A Family Man

Detective Jack Mook is a 22-year veteran of the Pittsburgh police force. Let's just say that the straight-talking cop is a little bit intimidating. Even Jack himself didn't know that underneath the tough exterior was a big heart. It all started when Jack, who volunteers at Steel City Boxing to teach underprivileged kids, noticed that two of his regulars didn't show up for practice. The two boys were Josh and his younger brother Jessee. Jack hit the streets to find Josh, where he discovered his heartbreaking secret.

"He was asking me about it and then I just cried," Josh told CBS' Steve Hartman. Josh revealed he and Jessee had been staying with abusive foster parents. Soon after, Jack arranged to be the boys' foster dad, and eventually he adopted them. Jack went from bachelor detective to single dad.

"It's the best thing I ever did in my life," Jack says. When CBS first aired the adoption story, they were flooded with emails  from single women. One of those women watching was Mary, although she didn't email, she took a more proactive approach. She heard Jack would be at a local bar so she went and introduced herself. The two were married last summer, and Mary brought her own three boys to the family. Jack never thought his life would turn out like this, but he is glad it did.

"I thought being single was fun because you don't have any responsibilities. But when you're single, you don't realize what you're missing. I'm glad I let her break through that barrier and take me away from that life," Jack says.
