When Sophina DeJesus was 12 years old, she used to dance with a group called Diamonds in the Rough. They caught enough attention to end up performing on national television on Ellen DeGeneres' daytime talk show. She and a group of other young girls wore matching camouflage shorts and red tank tops to do a hip-hop routine.
Little did Sophina know that just about 10 years later, she'd be returning to Ellen's stage to perform all on her own.
Not only has she been dancing for most of her life, but she's also always been really involved in gymnastics. In fact, she competed in Japan with the national team and thought that she might be going to the Olympics with Team USA. Then, too much training at too high an intensity led to a back injury, and that dream was crushed.
She didn't let that stop her, though. No way! Now that she's a college student at UCLA, she competes with the school's gymnastic team. Her routines are a little unorthodox, but much like when she was a young 12-year-old dancer, she caught the world's attention.
Combining her loves of dance and gymnastics, DeJesus has created a truly captivating, modern floor routine.
The look on her face when she's performing is one of pure joy. When you watch, you'll see why.
