Spelling bees have always been an exciting part of the school year. From the county championship all the way to nationals, kids get the chance to show off their intelligence in front of millions of people nationwide!
With all of those people watching and with the pride of a whole school waiting on the letters you say out loud, the pressure can easily cause even the bravest of people to get a bit shaky. With all that adrenaline coursing through their bodies, these young kids from all over the country manage to keep it all together in spite of all that nervous energy.
So when Jack Pasche made it all the way to the national championships, he must have been feeling that fear as he walked up to the microphone and waited for the judges to give him his word, "idiosyncratically," they said. Luckily, Pasche knew exactly how to spell the word, even with all of his nerves and shakiness, he would be able to keep it together for this round and make it to the next! He began to spell:
"I-O."
The second it came out of his mouth, he knew what had happened. Unfortunately, when it comes to accidentally saying an incorrect letter in spelling bees there are no take backs. Pasche knew he had lost, and he knew there was absolutely not a single thing he could do about it.
The thing about events like these and any sport in particular, is that it teaches us that sometimes we aren't the winner. Pasche wasn't going to get the big prize, but losing teaches a valuable lesson as well — sometimes the best you can do won't win you first place, but that doesn't mean you can't make a mark on people and make everyone smile!
Watch the video below to see how Pasche "recovers" from his mistake. And while he didn't win first place, he won the hearts and minds of people all over the country and has since gone on countless television talk shows for his grace in losing and amazing personality.
