Second-Grade Students Line Up To Have Yearbook Signed By Beloved Janitor

It’s a common tradition that graduating students sign each other’s yearbooks. But, what happened at Alan Shepard Elementary School in Bourbonnais, IL is certainly a unique case.

Second grade students were photographed lining up and waiting patiently to have the school’s custodian, Steve "Mr. Steve" Weidner, sign their yearbook. Shortly after the school posted the photo on Facebook, it went viral.

“Shepard Custodian Steve ‘Mr. Steve’ Weidner has reached Rock Star status as he autographs yearbooks for his ‘fans’!” the photo’s caption reads.

It’s not unusual for students to form a strong bond with their teachers, like the ones who penned powerful letters to thank several of their former educators. And who could forget about the student who created a fundraiser to help pay for his former teacher’s cancer treatment costs?

But, it’s not very often you hear of a beloved custodian who has made such an impact on students. Mr. Steve, who has worked at the school for 15 years, made sure to sign every single yearbook.

“He pays attention to the kids… he knows who they are,” Principal Shirley Padera told Chicago’s WGNTV. “The kids know if anything happens, Mr. Steve is going to take care of it.”
