Every child is going to face hardships throughout their formative years. Whether or not they have a supportive system in place — whether that’s parents, teachers, or close friends — signifies how they make it to the other side.
Jordan was a 14-year-old teen who had been making the long 6-mile walk to school for several months. His parents were going through some financial troubles and their family vehicle had been repossessed because of it.

Nevertheless, Jordan’s parents had always told him that getting an education was his top priority, so it was his job to ensure he got to school each day. Jordan’s parents had to take public transportation to get to their jobs every weekday, so they were also experiencing bouts of similar stress.
Jordan also had two siblings who were in high school and needed money to take the bus to get to class each day, so he didn’t feel right about taking any extra money from his parents. So, he routinely took it upon himself to make the long walk to school.

One day, Jordan arrived to class rather out of breath and his teacher, Mr. Harris, noticed. He asked his student if he was OK, to which Jordan decided to tell him that he had missed the bus and had to run to school to make it on time.
The past few months, Mr. Harris noticed that Jordan’s classwork had been slipping. When he called in his parents to discuss what could be done, he was told about the family’s unexpected financial hardships. Mr. Harris grew up in a similar situation and felt a great sense of empathy for families who were trying to overcome their troubles, especially if it involved their kids.
