As someone who definitely won't have a date on Valentine's Day this year, it can be a struggle to not become bitter. Looking around and seeing all the happy couples holding hands, professing their affection, and heaven forbid, smooching right in front of you can feel like a cruel joke when you're single. That's why I'm grateful for this epic anti-romance anthem by pop powerhouse Tina Turner.
Born Anna Mae Bullock, her electric vocals rocked the single "What's Love Got To Do With It," all the way to the number one spot in 1984. Given Turner's notoriously tumultuous relationship with former musical partner and husband Ike Turner, it's no surprise that she's able to expertly channel those emotions into a killer track with lines like "Who needs a heart when a heart can be broken?" And, of course, being released in the '80s, the song had to include an amazing music video to help promote it to the top-selling spot.
Like a lot of the artists in MTV's heyday — y'know way back in the day when the network actually showed music videos — the clip showcases some of the more interesting style trends from the decade. Turner's hair is as big and bold as her voice, maybe even bigger! Almost every extra and background dancer features plenty of spandex and neon accents.
The tune was also used in the biopic of the same name based on Tina's life with Ike, starring Angela Bassett as a slightly fictionalized version of the rocker.
