Buying a fixer upper home can seem like a huge challenge when you consider all the major renovations necessary to bring it up to date.
But these homes also tend to have some extra charm hiding underneath the surface as you peel away at the layers. Depending on how old the abode is, they can act as time capsules to the far past with their quirky — or possibly creepy — discoveries.
My brother and I used to roam around our childhood home's attic to see if there was anything lurking around from the old tenants. Unfortunately, all we ever discovered was how easy it was for our legs to accidentally fall through the thin ceiling. Tons of patchwork later, we never found anything nearly as fascinating as the folks who shared their stories below.
I can't believe all that they were able to find hiding behind their walls!

1. Gone Batty
"I'm currently in the midst of a basement renovation to my home, built in 1959. Today, I came across two items in between the walls, which had obviously been purposely placed there: a pair of old dress shoes and a baseball bat.
"I also found writing on a stud that says 'My Dad is a Fink.'" — Hobb3s
2. Showing A Little Leg
"My father found some legs once. He was looking down at the time so the first thing he saw was shoes and socks, then the legs. Poor fella nearly had a heart attack thinking that there was someone in there. Turned out that the wife of the previous owner was an amputee, and this was a spare set of legs that got left behind when they moved out." — BeliefSuspended2008
3. Love Notes
"When my aunt inherited my grandma's house after she passed, she renovated. When she took down the drywall of one of the rooms, she found writing underneath. There were lots of hearts and written everywhere was 'Curalene Johnson Loves Claudie Howard.'
"Claudie was my grandpa and Johnson was my grandma's maiden name, so my grandma had written that sometime in the late '30s to early '40s because they married in their teens." — blindbug
4. Packing Heat
"We managed to find this Deringer in one of our walls in our house." — Paddygs
5. Teen Idols
"A few years later, we were demoing a bedroom to refinish it as our nursery. The room had wood paneling, as did most of the house when we bought it.
"We took down what turned out to be the exterior layer of paneling to find another layer of wood paneling that still had posters of of Bo and Luke Duke and John Stamos thumbtacked to the wall." — narcoleptic13
6. Just Peachy
"When I was about 12 or 13, my family and I stumbled across several jars of preserved peaches. The house was built around the turn of the twentieth century during a time when our neighborhood was surrounded by peach orchards.
"The crazy part was they still looked good enough to eat. Of course, we knew better than to eat 90-year-old fruit, but we did rinse and save the jars." — Reddit User
7. Big Bang
"My parents found a live WWII munition hidden in a basement wall when they redid the electrical system last year. Apparently, it wasn't uncommon for a soldier to bring home a war souvenir. Nothing like a little bomb squad action to keep you on your toes." — duvallg
8. Busted Outlet
"When we moved into my new house, there was an outlet in the bathroom that just would not work. Eventually, my dad got around to changing it. When he pulled the face plate off, he realized that there was no electrical wiring.
"Instead, there was a plastic box attached to the back. Inside was a note from the people who owned the house in the late '60s, welcoming the new owners into the house. There were a couple of stories, well wishing, and $20 to buy something nice for the house." — capoteismygod
9. Spooky Sleeping Quarters
"Removing the plaster to bare brick revealed a bricked up doorway. We opened it up to see what was behind it.
"It was a small room with a rough wooden bed all rotted away, only the frame remaining and an upright chair with the back broken and a kind of tailor's dummy stood on a wooden frame." — Lard_Baron
10. Dangerously Efficient
"We were remodeling our bathroom and knocked one of the walls open. Behind the wall were thousands of used razor blades from the old double-edge shaving days.
"There used to be an old medicine cabinet with a slot where you would put your used razor blades into and they would just accumulate behind the wall." — Reddit User
11. All Hail The King
"An ex of mine lived in a pretty old house. Behind one of the bottom cupboards in their kitchen, there was a tiny door, just big enough for an adult to crawl through on his or her belly.
"Once you crawled through, you could stand up in the little enclosed room, maybe seven feet high and 5'x4'. There was writing and graffiti all over three of the walls, but on one wall, there was this large Elvis statue. It almost looked like a shrine." — xjentric
