Artist Creates Whimsical Chalk Drawings That Enchant Everyone Who Sees Them

Although many people describe it as "vandalism," street art can be one of the coolest things you can encounter in public. While many artists use spray paint to make their mark on walls and sidewalks, Michigan-based artist David Zinn chooses a less conventional medium: chalk. Since 2001, this artist has been creating delightful characters and scenes in the most unlikely places, and once you see his adorable and quirky creations, you'll be jealous of all the Ann Arbor residents who get to come across his work as they make their daily commutes.

Chalk is often thought of as the perfect way to keep kids entertained on long summer days, but adults can also make their own masterpieces with this washable material. This man recreated an iconic scene from The Simpsons on his driveway and showed everyone what happens when you put sidewalk chalk in a grown-up's hands! But Zinn's art goes far beyond driveways; he's worked in places as far away as Manhattan and the Sonoran Desert way out west! I haven't been this impressed with someone's ability to work with chalk since I saw what this artistic teacher does for his students every single morning.

Take a look at some of David Zinn's incredible work, and make sure you follow him on Facebook to stay up to date on his latest creations. I have my fingers crossed that he'll draw his adorable characters all over my city one day!

He uses the environment around him as inspiration for what his characters might be up to.

Many of his creations are best seen from a very specific angle, which gives them a 3D effect.

Where others might see a boring object or surface, he sees potential for new life.

'Broken' objects just make his job all the more fun.

He sometimes makes his work pop out even more using 3D surfaces.

His ability to bring inanimate objects to life is truly astounding.

You almost expect them to scamper away if you get too close!

Sometimes, he works with temporarily placed objects.

Other times, he makes permanent decorations a part of his work.

But there's just one little problem.

Because Zinn works primarily with chalk and charcoal, his creations are very temporary.

Unless it's done indoors, it's only a matter of time before his art fades or is washed away by the rain.

It's a shame, because the world would be a much more pleasant place to live if we had creations like this everywhere we went.

But then again, perhaps its their temporary nature that makes these quirky characters so special.

After all, part of what makes Zinn's art so impressive...

...is that it always looks like it might just get up and walk away.
