10 Surprising Facts About Pit Bulls

Dog enthusiasts are constantly fighting the uphill battle of bias against alleged "bully breeds," pit bulls foremost among them. A new video from Animalist has some interesting facts that may just pave the way for improved perceptions of these dogs.

Fact number one (and perhaps the most shocking): "Pit bull" isn't an actual breed. Susan Reaver, the president and founder of Pits and Rotts for Life Rescue Inc., tells the Washington Post that the term is often applied to the American pit bull terrier, but it can also include the Boxer, American Staffordshire terrier, Dogo Argentino, and Staffordshire bull terrier. Another common misconception is that pit bulls are innately ill-tempered: In fact, according to a result provided by the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls were friendlier than beagles, golden retrievers, and samoyeds.

Also, pit bull jaws don't lock (that's one of those myths that seems to stick around regardless of data). However they are, as the video points out, incredibly strong. Another interesting fact from the video is that bit bulls are incredibly loyal dogs when they have the proper care and training required by any breed to ensure healthy socialization. What's more, points out Animalist, they even make excellent service dogs, therapy dogs, and companions for children. Learn more in the video below!
